So what did that MBF just become?

The example starts at 1 MBF of 2×4, which is 1,500 LF. That is length at the size you typed — not a board count, and not the mill invoice if they tally on a different basis.

MBF is volume: thousand board feet. Linear feet is length. Thickness and width connect them. A 1×12 is the memory shortcut (1 MBF = 1,000 LF). A 2×4 is 1,500 LF. Same MBF, different footage.

If those dimensions are not the ones on the quote, this number is for the wrong board. $600/MBF is not $600 a foot — type the quote in the price field to get $/LF on this same size. This page also does not estimate MBF from a log.

How do you convert MBF to linear feet?

1 MBF = 1,000 board feet. Then convert that volume to length with the size on the quote. Same math the calculator uses. It is a geometric conversion from the values you type — it does not recreate a supplier's tally rules.

The formula

Linear Feet = MBF × 1,000 × 12 ÷ (Thickness in inches × Width in inches)

Worked example

1 MBF of 2×4 → 1,000 × 12 ÷ (2 × 4) = 1,500 LF. 2 MBF of 1×6 → 4,000 LF; same 2 MBF as 2×6 → 2,000 LF. Same volume, different length when the board size changes.

$/MBF to $/LF

$/LF = $/MBF × Thickness × Width ÷ 12,000. For $600/MBF on 2×4: 600 × 2 × 4 ÷ 12,000 = $0.40 per linear foot. Type the quote in the price field to get this automatically.

Which dimensions should you enter?

Nominal (or supplier tally) sizes are trade labels. Actual measured sizes are what a tape reads. Enter the basis on the quote — and keep it when you compare results.

Why isn't the result an invoice tally?

Softwood and hardwood yards may apply product standards, surface measure, or their own rounding. Use this for planning; confirm the tally on the quote.

What about rough vs surfaced lumber?

Rough stock may be tallied at a standard thickness; surfaced stock may be measured under a different rule. Width, length, and invoice rounding can also differ from an unrounded geometric result.

Why can the same 1 MBF produce two lengths?

The job
A “2×4” may mean nominal tally size or a board measured at its surfaced size. You check both before trusting a quote.

A thinner, narrower cross-section holds less volume per foot — so the same 1 MBF stretches farther in length.

How many board feet are in 1 MBF?

MBF is just board feet counted by the thousand — move the decimal.

The M in MBF is the Roman numeral for 1,000, so 1 MBF = 1,000 BF. Multiply MBF by 1,000 to get BF; divide BF by 1,000 to get MBF. Example: 2.5 MBF = 2,500 BF; 750 BF = 0.75 MBF.

What mistakes throw MBF → LF off?

Four mix-ups that commonly inflate or shrink the answer.

Reading M as million instead of thousand

In lumber, M is Roman 1,000 — so MBF is a thousand board feet, and MMBF is a million. Mix them up and you're off by 1,000×.

Using nominal size when the supplier uses actual size

Some yards price a 2×4 by nominal size; others use actual (about 1.5×3.5). Ask which dimensions they use before you convert.

Mixing up $/MBF and $/BF

$600/MBF is $0.60 per board foot — not $600. Divide $/MBF by 1,000 before you compare with per-board-foot retail.

Converting as if every board were a 1×12

People remember 1 MBF = 1,000 LF because that is true for a 1×12. A 2×4 is 1,500 LF; a 2×6 is 1,000 LF. Without thickness and width, there is no single length.
