How to Convert MBF to Linear Feet
Quick formula and worked example for the most common MBF → LF question.
To convert MBF to linear feet, remember that 1 MBF equals 1,000 board feet. Then use: LF = MBF × 1,000 × 12 ÷ (Thickness × Width), with thickness and width in inches. For 1 MBF of 2×4 lumber, that's 1,000 × 12 ÷ (2 × 4) = 1,500 linear feet. Wider or thicker boards yield fewer linear feet from the same volume.
Worked example
2 MBF of 1×6 lumber → 2,000 × 12 ÷ (1 × 6) = 4,000 LF. 2 MBF of 2×6 lumber → 2,000 × 12 ÷ (2 × 6) = 2,000 LF. Same volume, different lengths depending on board size.
MBF to Board Feet (MBF ↔ BF)
MBF is simply a thousand-unit of board feet — the conversion is a move of the decimal point.
The M in MBF is the Roman numeral for 1,000, so 1 MBF = 1,000 board feet (BF). To convert MBF to BF, multiply by 1,000. To convert BF to MBF, divide by 1,000. For example, 2.5 MBF = 2,500 BF, and 750 BF = 0.75 MBF.
| MBF | Board Feet (BF) |
|---|---|
| 0.5 MBF | 500 BF |
| 1 MBF | 1,000 BF |
| 2.5 MBF | 2,500 BF |
| 10 MBF | 10,000 BF |

Tip: The same MBF yields fewer linear feet when the board is wider or thicker.
How to Use the MBF to LF Calculator
You only need your MBF total and the board thickness and width.

The calculator instantly shows linear feet plus the board-feet equivalent. Add a $/MBF price to estimate cost.
Understanding the Units
MBF measures volume in thousands of board feet. Linear feet measures length.
What is MBF?
MBF stands for thousand board feet (M is the Roman numeral for 1,000). It's the standard wholesale unit for lumber pricing and volume.
What is a linear foot?
A linear foot is simply 1 foot of length. It does not include width or thickness.
Why convert MBF to LF?
Mills and wholesalers quote in MBF, but projects and inventories are usually counted in length. Converting tells you how many feet of boards an MBF order contains.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
These details often cause MBF → LF errors.
Reading the M as million instead of thousand
In lumber, M is the Roman numeral for 1,000 — so MBF is a thousand board feet, and MMBF is a million. Mixing this up throws the result off by a factor of 1,000.
Using nominal size when your supplier uses actual size
Some suppliers price dimensional lumber by nominal size (2×4), while others use actual size (1.5×3.5). Ask which dimensions they use before you convert.
Mixing up $/MBF and $/BF
A quote of $600/MBF is $0.60 per board foot, not $600. Divide $/MBF by 1,000 before comparing against per-board-foot retail prices.

Frequently Asked Questions
First convert MBF to board feet (1 MBF = 1,000 BF), then use: Linear Feet = BF × 12 ÷ (Thickness × Width), with thickness and width in inches. For 1 MBF of 2×4 lumber, you get 1,000 × 12 ÷ (2 × 4) = 1,500 linear feet.

Pro tip
Wholesale quotes move in $/MBF. Convert to $/LF before comparing against retail per-piece prices — it keeps the comparison apples to apples.
